MatchVid of the Day: Toki no Tobira vs Kitamura (SFA2)

It’s pretty rare to find quality Street Fighter Alpha 2 matches, and even harder to find any featuring Birdie – one of the concensus worst characters in the game – faring well.

players: Toki no Tobira (Birdie) vs Kitamura (Sagat)

observations:
There’s a crazy advanced Sagat anti-air Custom Combo at 0:19 that works out to be something like s.MP xx whiff Tiger Knee, HP Tiger Blow (two hits). It just looks odd to have the Tiger Knee completely whiff like that and then see the Tiger Uppercut connect. The rest of the match is entertaining too. I like how Sagat looks clearly terrified of throwing a fireball from 2:00 onward, particularly at 2:01 and 2:10.

KoF95/97/98 Throw Negation Bug by rock2no

While working on his latest combovid, rock2no discovered a series of related glitches which negate grabs in King of Fighters 95, 97, and 98. This video shows how they’re performed.

notes:
It’s a fairly straightforward glitch and rock2no has even provided a transcript, linked below. It seems that certain moves simply aren’t meant to miss and cause problems when they do. Maybe it can be useful in combos, for someone with quick enough command grab recovery?

The Dr. Sub-Zero Show – Episode 1, Part 1

Not too long ago, as a Dogface Show special feature, Dr. Sub-Zero (aka Rockefeller) sat down with SoCal Third Strike powerhouses 5 Star and ReNiC to discuss Third Strike – kind of.

notes:
There’s some relatively harmless profanity in this video, so fair warning. It starts off a bit slow, but things get rolling after the initial introductions. The whole episode is filmed on location at Denjin Arcade (in case you wanted to know what the Denjin Arcade bathroom looks like).

Weekly Screenshot: Let’s Dance

Whoever comes up with the best title gets to nominate two MatchVid of the Day candidates. As always, the rules are one entry per person and i’ll choose my favorite on Tuesday.

combovid-screenshot-06-jojon

JV Polnareff’s Armor Takeoff super whiffs as Chaca’s Bloody Flower super passes through him. Surprisingly few super moves have shadows in Jojo’s Venture. There’s certainly no shortage of weird poses and awkward-looking attacks though.

Evo 2010 Montage by Richard Li

Richard Li (of 1UP fame) released this video exactly three months ago after getting home from his Evolution 2010 trip. I didn’t know what to make of it at first, but i ended up rewatching it a couple of times and it really grew on me. Check it out if you haven’t seen it already.

highlights:
synchronized nodding at 0:07, Daigo playin’ it cool at 0:52, MarkMan cameo at 1:10, Ed Ma playin’ it cool at 1:27, Mike Ross getting serious at 1:45, tragic sacrificing his vocal chords for the community at 1:50, Valle roller coaster at 1:54, and skisonic hype at 2:25

Juan Fra and Keiko bring us another PS2 SDBZ combo video, once again showing a wide variety of classic Dragon Ball Z characters and providing a full move-by-move transcript.

highlights:

MatchVid of the Day: Maximilian vs CaliPower (SF4)

These replays are from an extended set of online Street Fighter IV player matches recorded last year. I’m not sure what the final tally was, but i watched quite a few of them.

players: Maximilian (Ken) vs Alex “CaliPower” Valle (Gouken)

observations:
Maximilian’s Ken has some insanely dangerous mixups and does tons of damage anytime he gets near Gouken. It’s also kind of fun to watch Valle refusing to give up on Gouken, even through situations where he clearly has no answer. But the real secret reason i’m posting this matchvid is because of the awesome 2-hit Gouken combo to finish off the round at 5:20.

KoF95 Combo Music Video by rock2no

Few combo makers “own” a game the way rock2no owns King of Fighters ’95. It doesn’t even matter if you play the game – his videos are always fun to watch, with countless surprises.

highlights:
KoF95 Robert side-switching jabs at 0:27, Ralf & Clark teamwork at 2:56, command throw whiff glitches at 3:06 and 3:21, Iori touch-of-death linkfest at 4:39, Ryo dash-cancel air fireball at 5:00, Athena whiff super cancels at 5:19, Omega Rugal ridiculous reverse reflect setup at 5:50, Andy triple ghettokick combo at 6:06, and Clark side-switching jab death at 6:46

Five Questions with desk

When you consider his entire catalogue to date, it’s easy to make the argument that desk is the best Super Street Fighter IV combo maker around. His videos are consistently creative, innovative, and just plain difficult! How does he do it? Read on to find out.

Maj: Your Ken vs Gief mini-series immediately caught everyone’s attention, and it was probably the reason we got to know each other. For a debut video, it was amazingly good. What gave you the idea to try something like that? (Why Ken? Why Zangief?)

desk-one_handed_combo_trialsdesk: For the 90% of people reading this who don’t know about those vids, they was basically 1/3 machinima, 1/3 combo vid, 1/3 soap opera. The whole concept was born from playing SFEX2 and thinking I might be able to do something cool with it’s quite needlessly involved replay feature.

Again, for people who may not have seen it, it allowed you to re-watch matches but with full control over the camera and the ability to remove the hud, background and/or individual characters. If you have a bit of patience, there’s a huge potential for cool/creative stuff.

Those videos were really ghetto though. They took forever, I had no idea how to edit stuff properly and the actual ‘combo content’ was either massively derivative or not that great. I’m glad they’re not easily available now. Hopefully, anyone who watched them when they came out will remember them as being better than they actually were.

MatchVid of the Day: Osmani vs Kensou (KoF2k2)

This is from a recent local tourney in Mexico City, featuring some of the top King of Fighters 2002 players in a very interesting match.

players: Osmani (Choi/Billy/Yamazaki) vs Kensou (Kensou/Athena/Ramon)

observations:
Athena performs a teleport and catches Billy in an air throw at 1:39, then follows up with that nasty combo. Something strange happens at 1:56 – Billy attempts to bait Athena into performing a CD break using block string dB, dC into qcb+D. Her CD counter gets caught by Billy’s qcb+D, but even though Billy starts the attack triggered by the counter, Athena still blows him away with the same CD! The active portion of Athena’s CD should’ve been absorbed, but maybe it hits twice? At 3:08, Ramon pulls out a dp+B and somehow Yamazaki falls too far back so Ramon’s dp+B followup whiffs and gives Yamazaki a slight advantage. Then at 3:16, Ramon performs a qcf, hcb+B DM as bait and Yamazaki steps back and rushes to grab with hcb,f+A. However, Ramon uses a quick qcb+hcf+B DM as soon he recovers to overcome Yamazaki’s grab and passes through to quarter-finals!
