MatchVid of the Day: CAB vs Desora (CvS2)

You have to admit, these Capcom vs SNK 2 EX-Groove matches are fun to watch. Every character is so outrageously broken with these motifications – even Balrog and Raiden!

players: CAB (EX-Guile/Sagat/Balrog-2) vs Desora (EX-Kuroken/Darkyoga/S.Raiden-2)

observations:
First of all, i didn’t even know Alpha Counters were cancelable in EX-Groove. At 1:55, Dhalsim busts out Counter Attack xx lvl2 upflame xx HP Yoga Fire midscreen. That’s pretty advanced. Of course, part of what makes these matches fun to watch are the ridiculous block strings that keep both characters’ guard bars flashing more often than not. Everyone puts on a good show except Balrog, who doesn’t get to do much of anything because Shin Raiden is too dominant.

SF4 Rose Alternate Solutions by Doopliss

This was actually the first full installment in this innovative series of Street Fighter IV combo trial tutorials, but i missed it the first time around so here it is now.

notes:
Rose possesses one of the slowest projectiles in the game, and these variant solutions take advantage of it whenever possible. She can use it to eliminate pushback, simplify links, and completely change the structure of certain combos.

High Knockdown Trick by Keiko on SFZ2 Blog

Keiko has posted a detailed explanation of the high knockdown trick in Street Fighter Alpha 2, based on an old AGSF2 article by Omar DeLoney. It’s actually a very interesting and useful setup, which comes in handy for all kinds of juggle combos. Here’s the link and a brief quote:

High Knockdown Trick (HKD) on SFZ2 Blog

This is a very interesting and detailed old article that was posted over the first american SF Community (Before SRK ever existed), i’m talking about alt.games.sf2, this article was made back in 1998 but it still being the most informative and complete one about the High Knockdown Trick on SFA2.

MatchVid of the Day: FilipinoChamp vs Haunts (SF4)

I guess these matches took place mid-way through SF4’s reign, when Sagat vs Dhalsim was emerging as a common matchup as people looked for ways to deal with Sagat’s dominance.

players: FilipinoChamp (Dhalsim) vs Haunts (Sagat)

observations:
In case it’s not totally clear yet, i’m a big fan of ghetto full-screen combos like the one at 0:51. Sagat throws an EX High Tiger Shot through Dhalsim’s Yoga Fire and it connects once, then he throws an HK Low Tiger Shot and it juggles. It’s kind of ridiculous that they gave that move juggle potential without meter cost, but it certainly leads to some cool surprise combos. I also like the way the second round ends at 1:40. That’s just plain mean.

Here’s another tool-assisted Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike choreographed match, this time featuring two of the game’s weirder low-tier character: Q and Oro.

highlights:

Manipulating Proximity Blocking on Sonic Hurricane

There’s a new strategy article on Sonic Hurricane explaining the concept of proximity blocking and providing a few example applications. Here’s the link along with a brief quote:

Manipulating Proximity Blocking on Sonic Hurricane

Dating all the way back to Street Fighter II, every attack has its own effective range which triggers proximity blocking. If the opponent holds Back while within that invisible range, they’ll stand still in defensive stance instead of walking backward.

Using this knowledge to your advantage is a key element of advanced footsies. The easiest offensive application is whiffing a jab while your opponent walks back and forth at mid-range. This will momentarily cause them to get stuck in place.

The Dr. Sub-Zero Show – Episode 1, Part 3

You may’ve thought it would never happen, but Part 3 is here! Thanks to a new volunteer video editor, the Dr. Sub-Zero Show is finally back on track. Fair warning: As with prior episodes, there’s some relatively harmless profanity in this video.

notes:
Tune in to find out what delicacy Yi “5 Star” Wang likes to indulge in. Discover who provides Ty “Renic” Mitchell with his enviable wardrobe. Learn who these Socal 3S players think is Norcal’s finest. And how exactly does the one-and-only Ricky Ortiz get brought into all of this?

SF4 Dhalsim Alternate Solutions by Doopliss

Doopliss has compiled another set of alternate solutions for SF4 combo trials, this time focusing on Dhalsim. Even if you’ve done them all, some of these are just plain fun to watch.

notes:
It’s actually funny how different these variants look from the intended challenges. Maybe it shouldn’t be surprising considering how useful Dhalsim’s Yoga Catastrophe is as a combo setup tool. But it still makes me laugh every time he uses Dhalsim’s far s.MK instead of B+MK.

The Dr. Sub-Zero Show – Episode 1, Part 2

The irreverent Dr. Sub-Zero continues his Dogface Show rampage as he grills Yi “5 Star” Wang and Ty “Renic” Mitchell on the history of American Third Strike.

notes:
Find out how Frankie3S sees the future and why he is considered the inspiration for the scene in the US. How did 3rd Strike come back from obscurity? What do Yi Wang and ReNiC think of SF4 and GGPO? What does Mike Ross have to do with any of this? And will Dogface ever manage to break out of his watery prison?

Kamen Rider V3 PSX Combo Challenge by ruslyg

I don’t know why i’m posting this. I’ve never seen this game before. Why does the background music sound familiar? It’s been a strange day. Enjoy!

notes:
I think the combo counter is located on the second line from the bottom. The first number is the hit count and the second number is the total damage. The last line tracks the player’s maximum values. Most of these combos exceed the minimum requirements, which is nice.
