SF4 Ryu Trial Tips and Alternate Solutions by Doopliss

Do you still have trouble completing the original Street Fighter IV combo trials? Is there one medal that eludes you? Well, Doopliss has put together a comprehensive text guide for the entire Trial Mode, and has started posting video guides as well.

notes:
Most of these alternate suggestions replace 1-frame links with multiple easier links, or use FADC routines to avoid the links altogether. If you’re comfortable with standard FADC commands, you might have a much easier time using these shortcuts and side paths.

MatchVid of the Day: FrankDux vs damdai (STHDR)

Something strange happens in this online match set at 1:52. Guile blocks Akuma’s red fireball, dies from chip damage, then the combo counter displays two hits. That fireball isn’t supposed to have juggle potential, and nothing is supposed to juggle in ST after someone dies.

players: FrankDux DimMak (Guile) vs damdai (Akuma)

observations:
If you want to know why Akuma was eventually banned from HDR tournaments, this set will give you a clear idea. You’ve got air fireball traps at 0:40, safe jump offense at 3:45 and 4:06, and dirty Raging Demon setups at 1:05, 2:27, and 4:43. Akuma even runs away slower than everyone else, by covering his tracks with air fireballs at 4:48. It really looks like Guile is hoping for a miracle against an overpowered CPU boss, which isn’t far from reality.

SSF4 Stun Combo Exhibition by SCHeartless

The premise behind this Super Street Fighter IV video is dizzy combos against Seth, which does tend to get slightly formulaic at points, but overall it’s a pretty good combovid.

highlights:
SSF4 Balrog variations from 0:15, Dudley linkfest at 2:13, and Juri triple c.HP dizzy at 3:40

MatchVid of the Day: Bas vs Ino (CvS2)

Can the A3/CvS2 king defend his crown against the talented K-Groove specialist? Somehow both of these guys showed up to London for a multi-game tournament and met in the finals.

players: D44-Bas (A-Sakura/Blanka/Bison-2)
                vs Ino (A-Blanka/Sakura/Bison-2 and K-Cammy/Blanka/Sagat-2)

observations:
For some reason, Ino decides to start off with an A-Groove team against Bas, which doesn’t work out too well. Then he switches back to his main K-Groove team and pulls off a remarkable comeback against what should’ve been a losing matchup. A few major things have to go his way, such as A-Blanka wasting his meter and getting dizzy at 3:39 instead of killing K-Cammy and neutralizing her meter – but it’s still a solid, gutsy win any way you look at it.

With the weekend over, it looks like that’s it for MvC3 announcements from New York Comic Con. We now have four new characters to think about: Arthur, Spencer, Magneto, and MODOK. Isn’t it strange to have so few Street Fighter characters, especially following SF4’s success?

RPS Perspective on Fighting Game Strategy on SH

There’s a new strategy article on Sonic Hurricane which explores various fighting game challenges through rock-paper-scissors comparisons. Here’s the link and a brief quote:

RPS Perspective on Fighting Game Strategy on Sonic Hurricane

Truthfully, RPS metaphors are only useful for deconstructing fighting games to illustrate the challenges presented by human competition. RPS models are great if you want to entertain people by translating your successes and failures into academic terms.

It’s much harder to go the other direction – from RPS theory fighter to developing a practical gameplan. Converting game specifics to RPS babble and back to game specifics is so much extra work that you’d be better off sticking with game specifics throughout.

However if you’re new to the competitive aspect of fighting games, it is important to grasp exactly what you’re getting into – and RPS can be useful in that regard.
