Crossed Arms by Emezie

Yeah i know this is over a week old. I found out about it late and i tried to avoid posting it, but it’s just too damn good. Is this the precursor to Namco x Capcom vs NASCAR?

MatchVid of the Day: JWong vs Steve H (CvS2)

In quite possibly the most bizarre CvS2 final ever recorded, it’s the last match of the first grand finals set, with JWong coming out of winners bracket and Steve H on the verge of elimination.

players: Justin Wong (C-ChunLi/Vega/Sagat-2) vs Steve Harrison (P-Sagat/Cammy/Blanka-2)

observations:
If Justin Wong was crowned the world’s most effective turtle player of the decade, i wouldn’t argue with that decision. It’s pretty much impossible to make that guy attack when he decides to camp out. So while it’s impressive that Steve H comes from behind to win the tournament, it’s even more impressive that his sanity survives this match. Justin makes excellent use of the clock, burning his meter at 1:28 to buy the first round. He literally sits out the entire fourth round to minimize the amount of life Blanka can regain, which basically gives Vega free reign over the last 15 seconds. But his strategy backfires in the final round when Blanka’s lvl3 super does just barely enough damage to tip the scales.

New Resources Section Added

If you look up at the menu bar, you’ll notice a new Resources button near the Video Archive link. The Resources and Guides section will contain the various strategy and technical articles published here at ComboVid, in addition to helpful video production tips and tricks.

Of course, these entries are accessible through category links to the right, but the Resources section will make it easier to find exactly what you’re searching for. It looks rather modest at the moment, but rest assured that it’ll be overflowing with quality content in no time.

So take a look around and tell all your friends about it! Mail them a nice hand-written letter, or give them a telephone call, or write them a digital e-mail, or send them a text, or tag up their facespace, or IRC them on twitter, or throw a rock at their window, or however it is you people communicate these days.

Street Fighter II Hitboxes

Here is a sample of Street Fighter II hitboxes, made with the MAME-rr emulator and Lua script that I developed based on work by mz and felineki.

A brief guide to seeing the hitboxes in action:

  1. Download and set up either MAME-rr or FBA-rr. We recommend MAME because the boxes can cause slowdown in FBA, but it works fine in either.
  2. Get the SF2 hitbox script and save it as a text file with the emulator.
  3. Launch the emulator and start any one of the SF2 games: World Warrior, Champion Edition, Hyper Fighting, Super, Super Turbo or Hyper Street Fighter II. Both “parent” and “clone” sets work.
  4. Open a Lua window. In MAME-rr this is done with Ctrl-L by default. In FBA, click Game, Lua Scripting, and New Lua Script Window. Click the Browse button in the window, select the Lua file, and click Run.

Now as you play the game, hitboxes are superimposed on the sprites. Blue is the area that can be hit by the opponent, and red is the area that can hit the opponent. The green boxes are the areas that can never overlap and will cause characters to push each other.

Japantown: World Heroes CMV from Fanatikof

ADK’s World Heroes series may be thousands of years old, but people still love to play them. It’s got one of those oldschool game engines where nearly every character is outrageously broken, so there are always dirtier combos to find.

highlights:
WH2 K.Dragon backwards chains vs Ryoko at 4:40, WHP Hanzo vs Janne at 7:26, WH Rasputin vs Brocken projectile chasing setup at 9:28

MatchVid of the Day: Yeb vs FilipinoChamp (SF4)

Dhalsim effectively turns this match into a treacherous obstacle course. Offensive characters like Gen can either find a way to make it over the hump, or die a slow, agonizing death.

players: Yeb (Gen) vs FilipinoChamp (Dhalsim)

observations:
Probably the nicest trick in the whole video happens at 3:52, when Dhalsim knocks down Gen and throws an LP Yoga Fire, then teleports in place. Yeb attempts to block the other way and gets hit, because he’s conditioned to expect a crossup teleport. But of course, none of this would be possible if FilipinoChamp wasn’t so precise with his anti-airs and overall spacing. He knows exactly when to use B+HK, B+MP, s.MK, B+MK, Yoga Catastrophe, and jump back fierce.

KofersChile CMV Vol1

Spanning seven King of Fighters games from ’97 to 2003, this massive collaborative combovid features the work of twelve different people. Much of the material isn’t quite groundbreaking, but to be fair, it’s difficult to achieve that with ten-year-old games.

highlights:
KoF2k Kyo vs Jhun at 6:23, KoF2k1 Chin vs Iori at 8:00, KoF2k2 Angel vs May Lee at 5:04, KoF2k2 Clark vs Chang at 9:48, and KoF2k Mary vs K’ at 12:22

MatchVid of the Day: Sirlin vs jchensor (SFA3)

Believe it or not, i bought an original B4 videotape directly from SRK way back in 2000-2001 (and later gave it away). One of the best matches on the tape was this unlikely early-round battle, and to this day it still remains my favorite jchensor match ever.

players: David Sirlin (X-Dhalsim) vs James “jchensor” Chen (A-Zangief)

observations:
Keep in mind, this was one of the first national tournaments ever held for SFA3. That’s why it still looks like an oldschool Street Fighter game instead of the insanely technical VC-fest that SFZ3 is today. Back then, Dhalsim was considered the undisputed best character in the game by a long shot, which makes jchensor’s eventual victory that much more impressive. Zangief spends the first 40 seconds of the match getting kicked in the head, simply working to get close. This match is the ultimate proof that patience and sticking to your gameplan pays off.
