Weekly Screenshot: Singing in the Steel Rain

This Street Fighter Alpha 2 screenshot took forever to capture. Custom Combo shadows are maddeningly uncooperative, not to mention CC startup wreaking havoc on input windows.

combovid-screenshot-02-sfa2

SFA2 Sakura activates Custom Combo facing left as Rolento jumps over her and activates his own Custom Combo. After a brief pause, Rolento’s HK Mekong Delta Escape -> j.D+MK meets Sakura’s backwards HP Shou’ou Ken as their CC timers expire.

Whoever comes up with the best caption wins an “Aura Blue” Arcade FightStick TE Keychain. As always, the rules are one entry per person and i’ll choose my favorite on Tuesday.

DDSoM Combo Video by sssskkkk

Who’s up for some more side-scroller combos? This compilation features all six character classes from Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow Over Mystara, fighting on nearly every stage and taking turns destroying nearly every boss. It was released two years ago on a Chinese BBS, then uploaded to u2b two months ago, but never received the attention it deserves.

highlights:
DDSoM Cleric six-hit kill vs Nagpa at 2:36, Fighter full-stage dash infinite vs Ogre at 3:51, Thief OTG infinite vs Harpy at 5:05, Elf perfect scorpion run at 7:02, Dwarf magic mashfest vs Synn at 11:04, and Magic User melee infinite vs Tel’Arin at 11:30

MatchVid of the Day: watts vs gootecks (SF2HF)

You know, i actually feel bad about posting this, but it’s so much fun to watch. It’s just so unfairly cruel from beginning to end! There’s even a torture intermission between matches!

players: Mike “watts” Watson (Ryu) vs Ryan “gootecks” Gutierrez (Guile)

observations:
The entire second round starting from 0:33 onward is a lesson in extreme Shoto efficiency. Watson’s crossup j.HK, s.LK -> c.LK xx LP Shoryuken branches off into so many options that he can hurt you no matter how you defend. Guile doesn’t even have charge to Flash Kick after blocking the crossup. And if you’re anywhere near a corner, it leads into Ryu’s fireball corner trap. Trust me, that’s not someplace you want to be. And if the matches themselves weren’t painful enough, the dirty bonus stage segment alone fills the oldschool grime quota easily.

Tekken Combo Debate Thread on TZ

Is it strange that i’m making a news post about a forum thread? Maybe. But here it is anyway, because it’s a genuinely interesting read and because i learned a lot from those four pages.

The Tekken Combo Debate Thread on Tekken Zaibatsu

It delves into various subjects and covers a lot of ground. After all, it’s not every day that we get to be a fly on the wall as some of the most prominent Tekken combo makers in the world discuss questions such as:

  • Walls, what’s your take on them?
  • Programmable sticks? Yea or nay?
  • How do you decide what stages to select when doing combos?
  • What aspects of the completed video are the most personal to you?
  • What’s the best way to get your videos seen?
  • How do you feel about collision / trade combos?
  • What do you guys use to make a combo video and why?

Lots of good stuff there. Go check it out.

MatchVid of the Day: Aris vs Brahma (T6)

You won’t find too many tournament finals matches featuring Dragunov – much less against a seldom-used character like Wang. That means unexpected things are bound to happen!

players: Aris (Dragunov) vs Brahma (Wang)

observations:
Aris pretty much dominates the entire match, but that can be traced back to one moment. The absurd, rage-fueled comeback at 1:15 shakes up Brahma and he never fully recovers. Of course there are some close calls throughout the set, but Aris always seems to have an answer – even when the answer is a wall run (3:57).

Interview with James “jchensor” Chen

Everyone knows jchensor, right? It doesn’t matter what aspect of fighting games you enjoy; he’s been involved in everything. Well, here’s an open interview with the man himself.

Interview with James “jchensor” Chen on Sonic Hurricane

Maj: Are you planning on making any more combo videos, or are you done with those for the foreseeable future?

jchensor: I think if I found an appropriate topic, I would love to make another Combo Video. The whole reason for making the 2-Hit Combo Video, however, was because I knew I could no longer keep up with the crazy combos people were coming up with in games anymore.

I simply just didn’t have the time to dedicate to finding weird Combos anymore. Experimenting with things for Combo Videos takes a great deal of time, and trying to keep up competitively at the same time is almost impossible.

But yeah, if I could ever find something that is worthy of a Combo Video that I feel very passionate about, I can totally see myself making another Combo Video in the future. I still get requests for the Ode to the 3-Hit Combo Video. ^_^

Follow the link above to read the rest of the interview, including questions about stream commentary, tournament play, and even character design. I would’ve posted the whole thing here, but i didn’t want double ComboVid’s word count in one shot.

SF3 3rd Strike Dudley Combo Video by 538

Doth mine eyes deceive me? Another 3S combo video from KYSG so soon after the last one? Once again, it’s labeled as an incomplete sample recording, not to be taken as Vol. 11 – but that doesn’t make it any less awesome.

SF3:3S Dudley whiff s.LP at 0:32, Dudley quad EX Machine Gun Blow combo at 1:10, Dudley vs Chun Li at 1:43, Dudley whiff chains at 3:18, History of KYSG+3S at 4:32, everything from 5:06 to 5:52, Dudley vs Remy at 7:21, and Dudley Corkscrew Blow KO at 7:57
