MatchVid of the Day: Tokido vs watts (SSF2T)

Who wants to watch my heart break in slow motion? This match took place just shy of top 8 at Evolution 2008, where John Choi eventually eliminated Tokido in losers’ semifinals.

players: Tokido (Vega) vs Mike “watts” Watson (O.Sagat)

observations:
Freeze at 1:00 to see Sagat’s j.HP miss Vega’s wall dive by mere pixels. That was the match right there. If your heart is still functioning, you can also pause at 1:01 to see Vega crouching just pixels outside Sagat’s throw range. It’s “Barlog Wins!” the rest of the way …

KoFXIII Kim Combo Exhibition by RealKim

This video has been making the rounds today, mainly because it was recorded at an arcade with a camcorder, in King of Fighters XIII’s Training Mode. Some of the combos appear to use too much meter, but at this point it’s interesting just to see what can be done in the game.

highlights:
KoFXIII Kim vs K’ at 1:45 with the “Time’s over” ending is easily the coolest part of the video.

Salvation – A CyberIori Tribute KOF Combo Video

Hi, my first post here. We’ve been working on this small community video which is mostly a post-mortem tribute to a combo maker and friend, CyberIori, who sadly passed away not long ago. The idea of the producer, Killer Knight was to gather some SNK community members in the Spanish forums of CX, KOF No Dead and KoFFuneral and release this small homage with a theme based in combos of Iori Yagami only.

Highlights:
1:08 KOF 97 Riot Iori vs. Yamazaki by Shiku-san, 1:49 KOF 99 Iori vs K’ by Aldevaran, 1:34 KOF XII Iori vs Iori by Awce, 3:43 KOF 98UM Riot Iori vs Athena and the whole bugs section

Whoever comes up with the best title picks the game highlighted in the next few screenshots. As always, the rules are one entry per person and i’ll choose my favorite on Tuesday.

MatchVid of the Day: Gamerbee vs JWong (SSF4)

And here is easily the biggest non-top-8 match played at Evo2k10. This was the final set that Gamerbee won to advance into the Super Street Fighter IV top 8 bracket.

players: Gamerbee (Adon-U2) vs Justin “Jwong” Wong (Rufus-U2/U1)

observations: Things start going wrong for Justin right off the bat. He gives away both rounds of the first match with massive gambles on random ultras. What’s worse is that he could’ve won both rounds if he’d started with U1 rather than U2. As the announcers note in the second match, he finally starts looking like the Justin Wong we know, but it really slips away from him in the third match. That DP FADC ultra at 5:12 swings the momentum heavily in Gamerbee’s favor, but it only happened because Adon was able to charge two bars of meter by that point. Gamerbee’s advantage throughout this set was his ability to control the tempo of the match and never allow Justin to get on a roll (except for that second match obviously). That’s why Adon always had meter exactly when he needed it.

SSF4 Dummy Glitch Tutorial by desk

This explains the odd behavior in desk’s SSF4 CMV No. 5 posted three days ago. Interesting …

notes:
Apparently SSF4 Guile’s standard turnaround animation causes him to move slightly, which turns into wobble-movement when repeated quickly. That’s what desk used to set up some of those fireball-chasing combos.

Five Questions with Derek “omni” Daniels

Starting today, ComboVid will feature a new mini-interview with a prominent community member every Wednesday. Our first guest is Derek “omni” Daniels, who has been a major influence on the Street Fighter scene since the olden days of yore.

Maj: Before Shoryuken.com was created, back when the fighting game community resided on alt.games.sf2, you were one of the members of the Infinite High Council. What exactly was the Infinite High Council?

omni: Like you mention, this was before SRK and the only real place to discuss Street Fighter was the alt.games.sf2 newsgroup. The ‘problem’ with AGSF2 is that the Versus series was looked down upon for the most part. It was really Spider-Dan and Viscant who eventually said, “No – these are real games also.” So there was no real place to discuss how the Versus engine(s) worked or nuances or anything really.

So I formed this terribly named email group named The Infinite High Council which consisted of: Myself, James Chen, Jef Pearlman, J.R. Guiterrez, Spider-Dan, Andy Mui, Eddie Lee, David Dial, David Wright and I’m sure I’m forgetting some people.

Basically it was a collection of players who were interested in finding combos in the Versus series and exploring the engine. Through this email list – we did find a ton of Infinites and were the first ones to figure out multi-OTG combos, Flying Screen Deterioration, how guard breaks work, how combing into throws works, etc.

It was a lot of fun figuring stuff out but once MvC2 came out and SRK took off, it basically fell apart and all those emails have been lost to the ether I’m sure. Either that or James Chen has them backed up in some weird SCSI hard drive or something.

MatchVid of the Day: Pyrolee vs Amir (SF3:3S)

In 2006, Evo held several regional tournaments for direct qualifying spots into the Evo World top 32 bracket. This was the final 3rd Strike match of EvoWest2k6, held near LAX. Watching Yun vs Chun Li in 3S is always somewhat boring, but it can be fun when it’s well-played.

players: Pyrolee (Yun-SA3) vs Amir Amirsaleh (Chun Li-SA2)

observations:
How did Pyro win that first round? Basically, that whole match was decided in under three seconds, from 1:42-1:45. Anytime you let Yun fire off two customs in one round, you’re probably not winning that round. All it takes is one normal combo for Yun to regain all that meter. That’s what makes him so dominant. He has plenty of offensive tricks too (2:50-2:55) so he’s even more deadly when he has a life lead and can afford to take risks. The only way to beat him is to smother him when he has no meter and aggressively press the advantage until he dies (3:50-4:50). If he catches the slightest break (6:32), it can cost you the round.

SSF4 Combo Exhibition by Dj-B13

This was released over four months ago, but it still holds up nicely. In fact we haven’t heard anything from Dj-B13 in a while. Hopefully this’ll help encourage him to make more videos!

highlights:
