Evolution 2k2 Raw Footage 3 by Shirts

Here’s another twelve minutes of raw camcorder footage from Evolution 2002. It starts off with over four minutes of Chikyuu’s T.Hawk beating down Guile in Super Turbo. It only gets more serious from there, with Shirts himself facing off against Chikyuu.

AaaA: s-kill’s Tournament Player Archetypes on SH

There’s a new spotlight/strategy article posted on Sonic Hurricane reflecting upon a classic Domination 101 essay written by none other than Seth Killian. Here’s a brief preview quote:

AaaA: s-kill’s Tournament Player Archetypes on Sonic Hurricane

However, the overall level of competition among the Street Fighter “middle class” has improved considerably over the years – partly due to fighting games becoming a niche hobby inbetween periods of mainstream success.

Even players who lose in qualifiers at Evo events are pretty well rounded now. It’s become more difficult to encapsulate everyone within s-kill’s original archetypes: the Scrub, the Turtle, Gimmicky Pete, the Stylist, and Grumpy Old Man.

MatchVid of the Day: Daigo vs Ricky Ortiz (SSF4)

I had to get around to this sooner or later, right? The Super Street Fighter IV finals at Evo2k10 ended with a string of high-pressure matches, mainly due to Ricky’s character choice of Rufus.

players: Daigo Umehara (Ryu-U1) vs Ricky Ortiz (Rufus-U2)

observations:
The entire second round from 0:50 onward is amazing on Daigo’s part. Check out how he sets up that crossup air Hurricane Kick. You know that’s exactly what he was planning when took that small step backward at 0:56, and even before then when he started throwing fireballs. This is exactly why jumping is dangerous. Rufus’ air time gives Ryu the opportunity to set up the crossup. And then check out how quickly Daigo rebuilds meter after the super. His gameplan is just ridiculously fundamentally solid.

Street Fighter Alpha Hitboxes

Today we’ll discuss some selected hitboxes from the Street Fighter Alpha series. To see these in action, follow the same procedure as last time, only instead of the SF2 script, download and run the CPS-2 script.

sfa-tatsu

sfa3-tatsu

SFA1 Hurricane Kicks hit both in front and behind, as they did in SF2. In SFA2, the air Tatsus of the Shotos lost the ability to hit behind, and by SFA3 all Hurricane Kicks (Shotos, Guy and Sakura) could only hit on the front swings. Continue reading →
