Screenshot Archive: Darkstalkers

Looking at the sheer amount of creativity that went into crafting the Darkstalkers series, it’s no surprise that so many famous comic book artists credit ’90s Capcom as a major inspiration.

DS Victor’s PPP ES Giga Hammer passes under J.Talbain’s HP ES air Beast Cannon. Talbain isn’t exactly my favorite Darkstalkers character, but his stage background is absolutely gorgeous.

For some reason, Guile still doesn’t get much love in general combo videos. Luckily the specialists are always willing to step up with dedicaded videos like this one, released today.

SFA Random Combos #01 by Keiko

If anything in this video seems strange, that’s because five different arcade/console versions of Street Fighter Alpha were used produce the large variety of bizarre combos shown.

Screenshot Archive: Cyberbots

Cyberbots: Fullmetal Madness has some of the most interesting animated backgrounds i’ve ever seen in a 2D game. There’s all kinds of elaborate insanity going on back there.

CB Jin’s Blodia cancels BIT High Blast into Planet Smasher as Mary’s Reptos performs Thunder Shaking so that both superfreezes occur simultaneously. Super moves are called Cyber EX attacks in Cyberbots – they cost full meter and they don’t have trailing shadows. The flames under their feet are special effects added by the stage, once the orbital platform begins descending into the atmosphere.

Welcome to ComboVid!

What do you think? It’s a little bare and a little rough around the edges at the moment, but that’ll change in no time. I have a lot of ideas for this place, so it’s only a matter of implementing them – however long that takes.

What can you expect from ComboVid? Well, i want this to be the first place you think of when you feel like watching a combo video. That’s my main goal and i’ll work hard to achieve it.

Don’t get me wrong, there are lots of great websites out there like SRK, CX, and TZ which provide excellent discussion grounds for fighting game players. But i don’t think anyone does a particularly great job of covering combo video releases in a way that’s accessible, informative, and well-organized. ComboVid will fill that void.

On an average day, you can expect to hear about any new combo videos released that day. I’ll also choose one classic combo video to spotlight. There are a lot of great vids that deserve a second viewing, and this process will build ComboVid’s archives. Ultimately i want people to come here to search for combovids instead of going to youtube, mostly because u2b is a huge disorganized mess and there has to be a better way.

Apart from combo videos, i’ll be keeping an eye on the whole community and i’ll spotlight any outstanding strategy or technical articles that come to my attention. If you happen to find some crazy unblockable technique in MvC3 and you decide to write a blog post about it, go ahead and e-mail me the link. I’m always down to take a look.

Once in a while, you may also see major industry news posted here. I’m not particularly interested in overanalyzing character select silhouettes, but sometimes actual important news is worth discussing – probably once or twice a week at most, to avoid unnecessary clutter.

I do have a few extra surprises in mind, but i’m not quite ready to spoil those yet. So take a look around, jump right in, and let me know what you think. Welcome to ComboVid!

SF1 Ryu’s 3-Hit Instant Kill Dragon Punch

Have you ever wondered how Sagat got his scar? Or why that SF1 Shoryuken did so much damage in SF? Ryu Exhibition? Well, this little video answers both questions. It even contains the entire boss battle, ending, and credits sequence from the original Street Fighter game!

highlights:
SF1 Sagat’s 8-bit concession speech at 0:42 and the brief Ken vs Gen cameo at 1:57

Kizuna Encounter: Super Tag Battle is a weapon-based tag team fighting game developed by SNK in 1996. I have to admit, i had never played the game before taking these screenshots.

God of War II Combo Video by Magnetro

God of War 2 was developed by SCEA Santa Monica Studios where a number of oldschool Street Fighter players worked as designers and animators. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that many of these Kratos combos look like they came straight out of a fighting game.

highlights:
GoW2 Kratos projectile madness combo at 1:23, throw tech trap combo at 2:56, petrify parry reflect combo at 4:07, and time-warped crumbling pillars sequence at 4:14
