Weekly Screenshot: Dark Moon, Dark Sun

Here’s the first of many new screenshots you can expect on a weekly basis here at ComboVid. The games will rotate on a monthly basis, as nominated by you.

SFA2 Evil Ryu’s HP Hadoken and Akuma’s HP Gou Hadoken pass through each other. It’s kind of a subtle Yin-Yang concept remake featuring the Dark Shotos of Street Fighter Alpha.

Whoever comes up with the best caption wins an “Aura Blue” Arcade FightStick TE Keychain. The rules are one entry per person and i’ll choose my favorite on Tuesday.

MatchVid of the Day: 大将 vs 777 (KoF94)

I’ll bet you weren’t expecting this! It’s a surprisingly recent KoF94 match from a Japanese tournament featuring every King of Fighters game – and this Kim player is brutal.

players: 大将 (Yuri/Mai/King) vs 777 (Kim/Chang/Choi)

observations:
Honestly, i have no idea what this game is supposed to look like, but that’s what makes it fun to watch. Just like everyone else, i played KoF94 for a little while back when it was released, but it looked nothing like this. It’s funny seeing how insanely dirty the Kim player is. Check out that nasty crossup at 1:11! I can’t even begin to guess which way you’re supposed to block that. And what about that whole sequence starting from 1:58? Literally every time he knocks you down, you’re guessing for your life. They just don’t make games this grimy anymore.

3S Makoto Combo Video by Goryus

Recorded well over three years ago, this video still reigns as the best 3rd Strike Makoto combovid ever made. It’s also one of the more stylish single-character exhibitions around.

highlights:
SF3:3S Makoto triple s.HP juggle (via dashpunch feints) at 1:20, Makoto sextuple j.HP at 1:48, Makoto extreme side-switch jab juggle at 2:19, Makoto kicking Akuma in the head really hard at 2:55, Makoto Taunt links at 3:21, Makoto kicking Twelve in the head really really hard at 3:35, and the dopest Makoto combo ever at 3:42

Content and Update Schedule

I’ve added a quick schedule reference to the About page, just to give you guys an idea of what ComboVid will look like going forward. This whole website is only ten days old, so a lot will change in the coming months.

Ideally, i’d love to showcase 2-3 new combo videos every day, but there aren’t that many being produced and i’d rather not post unedited single clips. If anyone wants to suggest any new videos for consideration, please refer to these basic submission guidelines. I’m always willing to review new material, for any game really – as long as it meets those criteria.

I’m also trying to decide on the best way to handle game industry news. Truthfully, i couldn’t care less about the vast majority, because at least 90% of it is pointless rumor-mongering. Who cares if B.B. Hood is going to be in MvC3? Until we have gameplay footage showing her moves, there’s absolutely nothing to discuss.

Some of it can be interesting though. For instance, it would’ve been nice to post a quick update back when Thor was officially announced for MvC3 – simply because the gameplay trailer would’ve been fun to discuss. So i guess if you guys catch anything substantial from an official source, please send me an e-mail and i’ll take a look.

That’s it for now, but there’s lots more on the way. Stay tuned!

MatchVid of the Day: P4P vs CaliPower (SSF4)

What makes this an interesting match is the clash of styles between oldschool Ryu and newschool Balrog. Clearly Valle has more experience in this match, which helps in the clutch.

players: P4P (Balrog-U1) vs Alex “CaliPower” Valle (Ryu-U1)

observations:
At 1:46, one of the commentators says that Valle is “definitely not afraid to keep throwing those fireballs.” That’s not really what’s happening though. Valle throws (precisely spaced) fireballs kind of liberally in the first 20 seconds, but that’s before Balrog gains enough meter to pose a threat. The fireballs at 1:08, 1:40, and 1:44 are canceled from c.MK so they’re safe. Where it looks like he’s going crazy with fireballs at 1:18, they’re mostly from full screen away and the only reason keeps going is because P4P walks into the second one – meaning he doesn’t have charge to ultra. In fact, the only truly risky fireball Valle throws the entire round is at 1:30. Could you react to the one punishable fireball out of eighteen?

Random 3S Videos by SlimX

Third Strike combo legend SlimX recently uploaded a series of nine uniquely original 3S clips. Anyone who’s stuck with the game since the early days knows how difficult coming up with new material has become, considering everything that’s already out there. Is this the end of the series? Or is he being a lazy bum? Only something something will tell!

highlights:
SF3:3S Oro quadruple fireball juggle (video #5), Ryu dramatic fiery superfreeze (video #6), and Makoto Seichusen Godanzuki trade combo (video #9)

Super Dragon Ball Z Combo Exhibition by Juan Fra

Although largely overlooked, SDBZ on PlayStation 2 was one of the better fighting games in the Dragon Ball franchise. Looking back, it’s actually surprising how many of them were made. This video highlights a large variety of characters and isn’t too picky about opponents either.

highlights:
SDBZ Android 18 vs Trunks at 1:32, Goku double Kamehameha at 2:51, King Piccolo midscreen crossup air combo at 5:14, Vegeta vs Frieza at 6:25, and Goku Spirit Bomb combo at 7:10
