MatchVid of the Day: Ohnuki vs Daigo (CvS)

Starting today, i’ll choose a single interesting match video to highlight every day. We’ll begin with a mediocre match in a terrible game which i happen to love: Capcom vs SNK!

players: Ohnuki (C-King/Dhalsim/Nakoruru) vs Daigo (C-Guile-2/Ryu)

observations:
Daigo’s Guile applies constant pressure against King, not allowing Ohnuki to establish any poking rhythm. Daigo uses two early wakeup Flash Kicks, before Nuki gains enough meter to punish with damage. Against Dhalsim, he either stays close or retreats to full screen distance, refusing to operate at mid-range where Sim dominates the match. Guile only jumps over Dhalsim’s fireballs, who can’t perform anti-air supers while he has a projectile on the screen. Nakoruru still almost manages to win the match, but Ohnuki drops a key combo at 3:21.

Basic Combo Video Etiquette: Capture

Many editing headaches can be avoided simply by planning ahead when capturing footage. These tips and tricks will help you get started on the right foot, saving you time down the line.

#1: Don’t use Infinite Meter. If you don’t want to keep switching back and forth between Infinite Meter and Normal Meter, then just use the Refill/Recover option. Not only does Infinite Meter look really tacky, but it also makes it difficult to tell how much meter is being used.

#2: Turn off background music so it doesn’t clash with whatever song you end up using. Almost every game has a way of shutting off BGM without sacrificing sound effects.

#3: Try to mix things up a little. Use different stages, different opponents, and different costume colors throughout your video. But please stay away from those over-the-top custom colors with really high contrast. Also make sure that the costume colors you choose stand out against the background. For example, don’t pick dark colors on the CvS2 rainy rooftop stage.

Crouching Wrestler, Hidden Potential by Doopliss

Well, there don’t seem to be any new releases today, so here’s a great Street Fighter IV video that didn’t get enough attention when it was initially completed.

highlights:
SF4 Chun Li double Hazanshu combo at 2:31, Dhalsim juggle tests from 3:13, Ken super juggles at 3:50 and 4:02, Vega vs crouching Zangief at 4:43, and Seth vs Dhalsim at 5:51

SF4 Screenshot Special Spinoff

The concept behind this batch of Street Fighter IV scenes is two-player teamwork. Placing the first two side-by-side with the second two makes it look like they’re fighting in pairs, kind of.

CJ Absolute Judge Side-A by Persona

Any Castlevania fans out there? This is the first half of an extravagant tutorial-style combovid for Castlevania Judgement, a 3D free-movement fighting game for the Nintendo Wii. The game itself was rather mediocre, but the combo system is interesting and the cinematics are cool.

highlights:
CJ Simon multi-object/stopwatch combo at 3:10, Trevor vs Simon at 6:45, Sypha elemental combo at 9:01, Eric vs Dracula at 11:26, and Shanoa vs Grant at 13:33

Ninja Masters Monster Pack by Gen

These are already spotlighted on Sonic Hurricane but they deserve a mention here too. After all, it’s easily the most comprehensive video project for Ninja Masters ever assembled. Don’t worry if you’ve never heard of ADK’s Ninja Masters – nobody has. It’s still worth your time to check these out. Every character is thoroughly explored, with creative setups throughout.

highlights:
NM Raiga vs Nobunaga at 2:35 of Vol 1, NM Ranmaru vs Kasumi at 4:05 of Vol 2, NM Kamui vs Raiga at 3:39 of Vol 3, and NM Ranmaru vs Nobunaga at 5:20 of Vol 3

SF4 Screenshot Special Prequel

Here’s the third batch of Street Fighter IV screenshots taken from the (unmodded) PC version of the game. I don’t think “threequel” is a real word, so “prequel” will have to do.

SSF4 Real Match Combo Video No. 1 by desk

There seems to be a new trend developing where people record online ranked matches and splice together combo videos from that footage. The actual combos tend to be relatively basic, or at least straightforward, but the setups are fun to watch. Here’s desk’s take on the idea.

highlights:
SSF4 El Fuerte OTG combos at 1:10, Chun Li vs Ken at 1:49, and Dan Taunt gimmicks at 2:25
