Weekly Screenshot: Sibling Rivalry

Whoever comes up with the best title gets to nominate two MatchVid of the Day candidates. As always, the rules are one entry per person and i’ll choose my favorite on Tuesday.

RBFF2 Chonshu’s Teiou Syukukyo Ken serpents collide with Chonrei’s Taiou Shukumei Ken stationary projectile, bringing it to the forefront above Chonrei’s Taiou Ryukoe Ken blast. The optimization step is always the hardest part of setting up these super clashes – trying to fit as much of each sprite as possible within the frame, while minimizing overlap.

MatchVid of the Day: Dudley vs Elena (SF3:3S)

Here’s the second match nominated by onreload after winning last week’s screenshot caption. More specifically, he recommended the Dudley/Elena set starting at 6:29.

players: ??? (Dudley-SA3) vs ??? (Elena-SA2)

observations:
Neither of these characters has much of anything resembling a defense, so the entire match is totally all-or-nothing in both directions. In the very first round you can see Elena in full control, until Dudley lands a single sweep and then it’s a complete 180° turn! And you have to like the confidence Dudley shows at the end of the round, utterly owning up her reversal super. It’s tiring just watching these two go at it. In fact, Dudley himself looks exhausted at 9:20!

Question Mark Coming Soon from Doopliss

This is the most random thing i’ve seen all week. It made me laugh at least.

notes:
I’m guessing it’s a teaser video for a new SSF4 combo video? The only reason i’m posting it is because Doopliss has made some of my favorite SF4-series combovids so far, so i think this is a good excuse for everyone to subscribe to his u2b channel. GoGoGoGoGo!

MatchVid of the Day: Tokido vs ClakeyD (SSF4)

Love him or hate him, you’ve got to admit – Tokido is entertaining.

players: Tokido (Akuma-U1) vs ClakeyD (Ibuki-U2)

observations:
ClakeyD puts in a good performance, but ultimately runs out of tricks. Who would ever expect to see time expire in an Akuma vs Ibuki match? Not only does Tokido make that happen at 6:00, but he somehow extends for another 5 seconds. That dude is a turtle!

SSF4 Super Freeze Set 2 by Snoooootch

Snoooootch continues to refine his series of slow motion Super Street Fighter IV attacks with Juri twirling, M.Bison defying gravity, and Cammy breakdancing.

notes:
SSF4 superfreeze generally takes up one frame of game time, but stretches it over a full second. This allows you to observe the opponent animating from one frame to the next in slow motion, displaying animations which normally don’t exist. Snoooootch has taken this concept and stitched together slow motion replays of Juri’s Fuharenjin, M.Bison’s Knee Press Nightmare, and Cammy’s Spin Drive Smasher.

MatchVid of the Day: Tokido vs Tottori (SF3:3S)

After winning last week’s screenshot caption contest, onreload chose to nominate this “bizarre finals match between Tokido (a fantastic Chun-Li player) and Tottori (a great Ryu).”

players: Tokido (Sean-SA1) vs Tottori (Alex-SA2/Makoto-SA1/Ryu-SA1)

observations:
“Tokido uses Sean, and Tottori uses Alex. After match 1, Tottori goes back to his Ryu, but Tokido sticks it out with a beastly Sean. My favorite moment is at 0:58 when Sean backthrows Alex into the corner, but Tokido, realizing he has 0 vital AND 0 pressure possibility with Sean, backs away slowly…” – onreload

SF3:3S Remy Combo Video by his1nightmare

Well, this is a rarity. We have a new tool-assisted SF3 3rd Strike combo video starring Remy. If any of these corner combos seem familiar, the description explains they’re “inspired by Tosaka, but try to make a halfway good video about Remy without using some of his strings.” True.

highlights:
SF3:3S Remy s.LK at 0:01, Remy experimental flash kick whiff at 0:18, Remy mirror corner juggle at 0:30, and Remy double EX thrustkick at 1:26

The Dr. Sub-Zero Show – Episode 1, Part 6

Here is the sixth and final part of Dr. Sub-Zero’s bizarre takeover of the Dogface Show. Enjoy! Fair warning: As with prior episodes, there’s some relatively harmless profanity in this video.

notes:
It’s actually pretty amazing that this got finished at all, and we have ReNiC to thank for that. And just in time for the live Dogface Show at SCR this weekend!

Marvel Hitboxes

The fourth installment of the hitbox series covers the five Marvel games on CPS-2: X-Men Children of the Atom, Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, and the first Marvel vs. Capcom.

If you want to see these in-game, while playing, download the Marvel hitbox script and run it in MAME-rr or FBA-rr with any ROM version of these games. See the SF2 article for details.

xmcota-multiboxes

In the Marvel games there can be up to two hitting boxes and four hittable boxes for a single animation frame, one more of each than available in previous games. It’s not common for all four blue boxes to be used at once, but many attacks have two red boxes. Usually they serve to smooth out the attack area but some attacks hit in opposite directions at once.

MatchVid of the Day: Edma vs ComboFiend (SF4)

In honor of the recent Ed Ma interview, here’s a Street Fighter IV tournament match between two of SoCal’s finest – played in unusual three-out-of-five round format.

players: Edma (Akuma) vs ComboFiend (C.Viper)

observations:
That’s got to be a heartbreaking sight at 0:16 – an entire round of work instantly wiped out! But when you’re up against an alert player who knows the game inside out, there’s no such thing as a sure victory. It’s a well-played match all around, but i particularly like the way Akuma uses the Focus Attack at 2:29 to dodge Viper’s flame kick. The dusty finish was awesome too.
