Evolution 2010 Season Wrap Up Part 2 by jchensor

Following up on his previous article, jchensor gives us his take on the future of fighting games as mainstream competitive entertainment, focusing on what makes the genre good for spectators in particular. Here’s the link along with a brief quote:

Evolution 2010 Season Wrap Up Part 2 on Meet jchensor

You could have the greatest sport in the world, but if no one watches, it will never go anywhere. Yes, if you are an expert of your game, it is always fun to watch high level play no matter what because you are aware of things that are going on. But for a competitive game to prosper from a mainstream standpoint, it must be enjoyable for the casual viewer. And it’s this area that Fighting Games truly shine. They are, by far, the best game to watch for spectators. And the reason for this comes from three main factors: Viewer Information, Tangible Action, and Balanced Pacing.

What does he mean by those three factors? Click through and find out.

MatchVid of the Day: VDO vs Robust (MvC2)

Here’s the second match nominated by Snatcher after winning last week’s screenshot caption. It’s actually the full tournament set between VDO and Robust (aka Potter) from Evo2k9.

players: VDO (Ken/Colossus/Rogue) vs Robust (Sentinel/Storm/CapCom & Storm/Sent/Cable)

observations:
It’s hard to believe this actually happened and ended the way it did – a literal death race against the clock. For anyone who complains about top players playing safe with top tiers, this is why they have to do it. Because this only has to happen once; then you never live it down.

SSF4 Super Freeze Series Explanation by Snoooootch

There seems to be some confusion regarding Snoooootch’s Super Freeze montages, so this video provides a brief visual overview of what’s actually going on during SSF4 superfreeze.

notes:
As you can see from the match clip, slowing down playback speed using an editing program only increases the wait time between frames. In this case, all it does is make the animation look choppy. Conversely, initiating superfreeze in the SF4 series causes a fluid slow motion effect by creating a whole bunch of inbetween frames that simply don’t exist at normal speed.

MatchVid of the Day: Bas vs Pinokio (CvS2)

After winning last week’s screenshot caption contest, Snatcher chose to nominate this tense CvS2 match from a few years ago, featuring the familiar A-Groove vs K-Groove rivalry.

players: D44-Bas (A-Vega/Blanka/Bison-2) vs Pinokio (K-Hibiki/Sagat/Cammy-2)

observations:
It starts off as kind of a slow match between two long-range poking characters, but gets somewhat interesting as Hibiki refuses to die. Finishing off Vega is no easy task either, and it’s pretty impressive how it actually happens. A-Blanka is a bully as always, but two wasted CC activations and a couple of clutch uppercuts later, he finally goes to sleep. Pinokio starts off the Cammy round well, but Bas finally lands a CC (in the most ghetto way imaginable) and that’s the end of that.

It seems we have another newcomer to the SNK side – specializing in chaotic striker combos for King of Fighters 2000 and 2001. This combovid was recorded and edited entirely by CyberXkxDashX, and i’m sure you’ll agree that it’s quite good for a first effort.
