Weekly Screenshot: Shoryu Shoryu!!

Whoever comes up with the best title gets to nominate two MatchVid of the Day candidates. As always, the rules are one entry per person and i’ll choose my favorite on Tuesday.

MatchVid of the Day: Shoryu Shoryu!! (SF3:3S)

Forget about the Ken players – this one’s all about the insanely single-minded commentator. Can you guess his favorite word?

players: KO (Ken-SA3) vs Deshiken (Ken-SA3)

observations:
He makes excellent “Shoryu Shoryu!!” reads at 0:26 and 0:30, but definitely gets baited into guessing wrong at 0:52. He doesn’t allow that mistake to break his rhythm and makes an excellent recovery at 0:59. Unfortunately it still affects his confidence and leads to a huge missed opportunity at 2:20. Sadly, Ken’s dominant s.MP rushdown at 2:50 seals the match and cheats him of one last chance to redeem himself. Yet it stands as a strong performance overall.

Basic Urien Combos by K-6

Looks like i missed one. Apparently this was made by special request at some point between rKf’s Combo Vid No.4 and No.5, when someone asked him for advice on beating Yang. He says, “The whole thing took only an hour from recording to encoding but I think it’s good stuff.”

highlights:
SF3:3S Urien clever backdash at 0:27, Urien double Aegis usage at 0:35, Urien throw juggle setup at 0:55, and Urien vs Yang divekick punish at 1:14

Secret Origins #2

As far back as i can remember, there’s always been a central website uniting the combo video niche within our community. When i first found the tournament scene, gamecombos.com served this role. Eventually it stopped being updated, as all free websites do – and everyone temporarily transitioned to IRC (#gamecombos on EFnet).

Not long after, tragic, eKiN, and i collaborated on a startup website called Video Opera which replaced GCC. Unfortunately that didn’t end well, for reasons i’d rather not delve into. Suffice it to say, it went down and there was nothing i could’ve done to restore it.

However i wasn’t ready to give up on what i had hoped VidOp would become. I thought the core premise deserved another chance, so i registered combovideo.com and began planning for a new beginning. A couple of weeks later, i realized it would be a good idea to register combovideos.com as well. Turned out it was already taken, hosting a rotating gold CV graphic with the words “Coming Soon” written underneath.

Five Questions with John “ChoiBoy” Choi

As the first person ever to win two marquee Evo World tournaments over a single weekend, John “ChoiBoy” Choi is really good at Street Fighter. If you’ve ever met John Choi in the Losers Bracket of any tournament, chances are you’ve lost to John Choi. He was kind enough to answer five of my questions, and even obliged several extra follow-ups.

Maj: You’ve been the first name everyone associates with NorCal for as long as i’ve been part of this scene, but i know that the original NorCal/SoCal rivalry was Thomas Osaki vs Tomo Ohira. How did you inherit the crown from Thomas Osaki?
ChoiBoy and JWong facing off at Evo2k7
ChoiBoy: This is pretty simple. Thomas dropped out of the scene after Super Turbo days and got into Quake. I stuck around and been at it ever since. Thomas did return a couple of years later and even attended EVO, but he got caught in the black bracket of death and was eliminated by me. :)

I’ve been in the scene for a long time and organized various events including Super Battle Opera qualifications and NorCal Regionals. I like NorCal very much and I don’t see myself living anywhere else. Especially since I just bought a home here. So you can expect me to be continuously involved with the scene here for as long as I can!

MatchVid of the Day: Chris Hu vs Sanford (SF4)

Now that everyone is used to Super Street Fighter IV’s reduced overall damage, especially for uppercuts, it’s interesting to take a look back at how strong Sagat used to be. For my money, no one had a scarier Sagat than Sanford Kelly.

players: Chris Hu (Ryu) vs Sanford Kelly (Sagat)

observations:
Throughout the set, Chris Hu show he has gdlk reactions and extreme calmness. Sanford Kelly, however, seems to be able to hit an uppercut from anywhere on the screen, and in vanilla it doesn’t take very many of them to get the job done. Sagat’s unlikely comeback at 2:47 shows you how one gutsy uppercut can change everything.

Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition Japanese Trailer

This was posted on Capcom-Unity just now, at inexplicably late hours of the night. Apparently it’s meant to explain the two new features included in the Nintendo 3DS version of SSF4.

What the hell is going on this video? Statues fighting each other through backpacks? What?

SSF4 Super Freeze Set 1 by Snoooootch

Have you ever wanted to see Ryu’s super fireball or Chun Li’s lightning kicks in slow motion?

notes:
Longtime Super Street Fighter IV players know that superfreeze takes up one frame of game time, but stretches it over a full second. This allows you to observe the opponent animating from one frame to the next in slow motion, displaying animations which normally don’t exist. Snoooootch has taken this concept and stitched together slow motion replays of Ryu’s Shinku Hadoken, Blanka’s Ground Shave Roll, and Chun Li’s Senretsukyaku.

Evolution 2010 Season Wrap Up Part 1 by jchensor

In the wake of Evo2k10 turnout growing significantly larger than any Evolution series event before it, the question now is: Where do we go from here? Well, jchensor has a few ideas. Here’s the link along with a brief quote:

Evolution 2010 Season Wrap Up Part 1 on Meet jchensor

Let’s just cut to the chase, first and foremost. Street Fighter IV has changed everything. What this game and Super Street Fighter IV have done to the Fighting Game Community cannot be denied. One main reason that it’s not proper to focus on the communities of Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom, Melty Blood, Tekken, and Super Street Fighter II: HD Remix is because, quite simply put, these communities are overshadowed by the sheer size and power of the Street Fighter IV community. And while this may make some of these other communities upset to hear me say this, especially because some members of these communities look down on Street Fighter IV, I think communities need to look at the positives that Street Fighter IV has been bringing the Fighting Game Community as a whole.
