Coping with Frame Rate Limitations

Generally speaking, videos uploaded to u2be suffer a drop in quality in the conversion process. This can be offset by uploading in high resolution, but one thing you can’t avoid is the 30 frame per second limit on framerate. This can be problematic for video game footage: Games display at around 60 fps and older hardware may rely on the high frequency for visual effects, and combo videos become difficult to study frame by frame.

Sprite flickering was especially prominent in 2D games to indicate that something was appearing, disappearing, invisible, or invincible. It’s also employed in situations where there are more sprites on screen than the hardware can handle. Dropped frames cause flickering objects to remain solid or disappear entirely. Maj recently reupped his SF? Guile Exhibition in high res, and that’s what happened to the barrel debris in the bonus stage intermission.

Knifin’ Around by spookydonkey

As a follow-up to his recent SSF4 Cody combovid, spookydonkey has compiled a highlight reel of “KniFADC, neg-edge KnifeGrabThrows, and great CriminalUpper juggles.” It’s a lot of fun to watch, even if you’ve never played Cody before.

highlights:
SSF4 Cody anti-sweep backdash at 0:51, Cody anti-teleport knife at 1:02, and Cody anti-air mid-juggle knife pickup at 1:45

sh/f Super Fireball Battle – Deleted Scenes

For those of you who enjoyed last year’s Super Fireball Battle Evo video, here’s some extra footage that didn’t make the final cut for one reason or another:

KoF2000 Bao Fireball Battle by Remxi

Super Fireball Battle – Deleted Scenes and Extended Cuts by Maj

Some of these are rather basic (SFA2 Sagat/Sagat) but some of the others do get fairly elaborate (CvS2 ShinAkuma/Rock and SFA3 Rolento/Sakura). A few of them are pretty funny too, especially Bao’s random gynmastics and Sagat running away from himself.

Five Questions with David “Magnetro” Avila

As one of the most prolific video makers in the Marvel community, David “Magnetro” Avila has produced just about every type of project imaginable for MvC2 – from combo exhibitions, to glitch compilations, to strategy tutorials, to pure situational experimentation.

Maj: As a combo maker, what’s the first thing you do when learning a new character?

Magnetro: I try to get a feel for the character by playing them in training mode for a bit — you know, mess with air combos, specials and supers. This is all just trying to get an idea of how the character feels like when they’re moving.

Magnetro's Variable Atmosphere 2The next step is to try to get an idea of the character’s limits. This is when I start to use programmable controllers to see how fast or how slow things can get tweaked.

For example, if I wanted to see how slow Ruby Heart can stretch her Start Button bug, I can program it and test it out frame-by-frame to see exactly how far I can take it. I try to list all the interesting aspects that I could potentially use in a clip for that character in notepad to make sure I don’t forget any.

After that, it’s just a matter of trying to piece everything together in one clip. Although there was more than one step, that’s the first thing I do when I mess around with a character.

MP196704: A Cody Combo Movie by spookydonkey

Here’s one for all you Cody fans. Single-character combovids can be tricky to make because it’s hard to come up with enough variety to keep viewers interested. However, spookydonkey does a great job of showcasing a diverse mix of Super Street Fighter 4 combo techniques and advanced setups, while also capturing Cody’s almost-lazy apathetic demeanor.

highlights:
SSF4 Cody pushing buttons at 0:38, Cody double meaty F+MP at 0:55, Cody double-Bingo at 1:50 and 2:00, Cody mid-combo meaty s.HP at 2:27, Cody vertical j.HP corner juggle at 3:20, Cody “meaty on dizzy” s.HP at 4:24, and Cody midscreen dizzy/knife/meaty/super at 4:49

Marvel vs Capcom 3 Galactus Boss Battle Trailer

The rumors are true – the final boss of Marvel vs Capcom 3 is none other than Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds! He plans to make Planet Earth his next meal, and it’s up to your team of three heroes to fight through his two chosen heralds and defeat him to prevent “Earth K.O.”

Apparently Galactus isn’t too fond of assists (0:50), has an 80% damage eye beam (1:00), plays a wicked air guitar (1:07), and has a 185-hit full-screen super (1:10). Nice!

Fatal Fury 2 Short Combo Clip Vol.01 by Keiko

Who remembers this classic Neo Geo fighting game? I played the Sega Genesis version a lot back in the day, but i had no idea it had such ridiculous combos. Apparently several special moves don’t knock down crouching opponents, which causes them to hit multiple times.

highlights:
FF2 Terry triple Burn Knuckle at 1:08, Andy double Kuhadan at 1:43, Axel redizzy combo at 1:53, and Kim triple-jump combo at 2:34

T6BR Yoshimitsu Combo Exhibition by 538

Wow, this is strange. Not only does 538 have a new Tekken 6 Bloodline Rebellion combo video performed entirely on the PSP version, but it’s also manually executed. This may be the first non-tool-assisted video we’ve ever seen from him, and it’s still extremely good.

highlights:
T6BR Yoshimitsu midscreen double-tackle at 0:53, Yoshimitsu Soul Calibur combo at 1:46, Yoshimitsu vs Azazel combos at 2:54, Yoshimitsu 100% damage combo vs Jin at 4:28, Yoshimitsu anti-bear helicopter at 5:10
