MatchVid of the Day: Ohnuki vs Daigo (CvS)

Starting today, i’ll choose a single interesting match video to highlight every day. We’ll begin with a mediocre match in a terrible game which i happen to love: Capcom vs SNK!

players: Ohnuki (C-King/Dhalsim/Nakoruru) vs Daigo (C-Guile-2/Ryu)

observations:
Daigo’s Guile applies constant pressure against King, not allowing Ohnuki to establish any poking rhythm. Daigo uses two early wakeup Flash Kicks, before Nuki gains enough meter to punish with damage. Against Dhalsim, he either stays close or retreats to full screen distance, refusing to operate at mid-range where Sim dominates the match. Guile only jumps over Dhalsim’s fireballs, who can’t perform anti-air supers while he has a projectile on the screen. Nakoruru still almost manages to win the match, but Ohnuki drops a key combo at 3:21.

game: Capcom vs SNK (Arcade)

venue: CvS Japan Nationals – Semifinals

recorded on September 24th, 2000

Good stuff. Wish I could play Guile like that…

I’m always skeptical of “Daily” features, though. That is to say, skeptical of whether they’ll actually be able to remain “daily” or not. But this seems promising.

    • Maj says:

Eh, it’s worth a shot. Plus i’m not too worried about obeying strict schedules. Even if i miss a couple of days every month, it’ll still average out to “daily.”

At any rate, saying “daily” and missing a few days is better than calling it “weekly” and staying on schedule, right?

  2. Keiko says:

You’re not the only one that love CVS Maj, it’s one of my favourite Fighters (over cvs2 inclusive), it’s not that terrible, i found it very amusing since the first time i played it back in 2000.
Great Match, long time i didnt see this one.

    • Maj says:

CvS has some interesting aspects, not to mention the whole historic Capcom/SNK crossover which was very exciting at the time. It’s also the first game i really tried to play competitively, so it still has personal value to me.

That said, the gameplay is painfully defensive and incredibly limited. As if four buttons wasn’t bad enough, it’s even worse that the R1 characters are all top tier. They were intentionally designed to be more limited than higher ratio characters. So the whole game just feels like a slow, dumbed down version of Street Fighter.

But what i can i say? It’s still got Zangief vs Raiden and sweep xx ShinSho!

Thanks for linking to the match Maj, it was a refreshing change of pace =D
Do you have links to other CvSNK 1/Pro matches? For that matter is this CvSNK or Pro?

Any chance you could put a match vid from SF2 (CE or ST) showing Guile kicking ass?
Looking forward to more vids =D

    • Maj says:

This is CvS1, not CvSPro. Nobody bothered to play CvSPro. They took away sweep xx ShinSho!

Seriously though, it was only released on Japanese Dreamcast. That means nobody in America could buy it and nobody in Japan played it because it never got an arcade release. By the time CvSPro was released on PSX a year later, nobody cared (except pirates and sprite rippers) because CvS2 was already out.

I might post more CvS1 matchvids but it’s better not to hold your breath because there are a lot of other games to show first.

  4. Keiko says:

@ Tizoc: you should look forward for those old B5 CVS Footage and Texas Shodown if you want to see some good Matches.

  5. Tizoc says:

@Keiko- Hmm will look those up.

@Maj- Did they? I could’ve sworn Dan at least could do Cr. HK–>Koryu Rekka at the corner in CvSNK Pro @_@ I’ll run the emu later and test it out.

    • Maj says:

Dan is a poor substitute for Ryu. CvSPro isn’t 100% bad, but it is 99% pointless. Believe me, nobody cares about that game. Capcom half-sequels are generally completely ignored by the community.

The only reason people know about SFZ2A, SFA3U, CvSPro, CvS2EO, etc. is because showcasing version differences is interesting to bored combo makers. I’m not hating or anything – i do it too. But that doesn’t change the fact that those games don’t matter.

Btw the easy way to tell CvS apart from CvSPro is the lifebar color. CvS1 is yellow and CvSPro is green.
