MatchVid of the Day: JWong vs Vangief (SSF4)

It’s still not clear what happened to Justin Wong at Evo2k10. He lost two consecutive sets to Vangief and Gamerbee just shy of making it into top 8, and this was the first of those losses. Not to take anything away from Vangief, but everyone knows Rufus has a tough time against Zangief. So why did JWong pick Rufus, knowing that he’d have to face a solid Zangief player?

players: Justin “JWong” Wong (Rufus-U2) vs Vangief (Zangief-U1)

observations:
Vangief is seriously scary with those j.U+HP headbutt dizzies. Even though he only lands one them (at 0:35), it has an impact on the rest of the set, causing Justin to hesitate. Vangief also has several effective responses to Rufus’ c.HP, such as j.HP, s.LK xx EX greenhand which does good damage and leads to nasty wakeup games. To Justin’s credit, it’s amazing that he avoids the walking 720 at 2:43, but the backdash UAB at 9:23 ultimately seals his fate. The end of that round is a disaster, with Justin gambling uncharacteristically on very risky EX moves.

That’s the Zangief player I want to become… someday. I’m still wondering how does he do the walking 720°.

    Great match.

keep in mind don’t actually need to do a 720 motion in sf4, you only need to do a 540. But it’s the same idea as Balrogs dash ultra, you have about 20 frames to finish an input after you start it, he does the motion during the c.lk walks forward and presses PPP

thats really good stuff. the best part about this match is that it makes both players look great. as fun as that hyper fighting guile vs ryu vid a few days ago was, THIS is the kind of match i like to watch.
