Updated Version: About ComboVid.com

You know how they say we only use 10 percent of our brains?
Vince Vaughn thinks we only use 10 percent of our hearts.
I think we only use 10 percent of our video games.

Game developers spend eighteen months crafting an interactive world that players can explore for years, then abandon it in a matter of weeks. To this day, people still talk about Street Fighter II, Streets of Rage 2, Final Fantasy Tactics, and God of War.

Does the industry care? Barely three months go by before both the publishers and the media move on to the next shiny object, leaving the players behind. If they happen to provide a tutorial or training aid, it only covers the rudimentary basics.

Why bother building a fully functional spaceship manufacturing plant only to label it a bicycle factory? There’s so much about these games that would go completely unnoticed (even by their designers) if not for individual players pushing past the intended limits.

The most interesting part of a game’s evolution happens after the first year – not in the first three months. But you’ll only see that in a combovid.

Update Schedule

Expect roughly 3-5 updates per day, primarily focusing on combo video news, but also branching out to other relevant content. Some days may be slower than others, and inevitably some days will have no new releases whatsoever. When there’s nothing substantial to post, i’d rather call it a slow day than force the issue with flimsy gimmicks.

Daily Updates
MatchVid of the Day – new and old games spotlighted and annotated!
Classic ComboVid – memorable videos from the past highlighted again!
Oddball ComboVid – featuring random obscure games nobody plays!

Weekly Updates
Top Player / Combo Maker Interview – posted every Wednesday
Screenshot Caption Contest – posted every Thursday
Bonus Screenshot Variants – added every Tuesday
Vid of the Week – updated every Monday

More on the way, including tons of exclusive features and unscheduled content added on a regular basis! Stay tuned!

    Does anyone read “About” pages?

  2. Arc says:

    Maybe, maybe not.

  3. darcontek says:

This site is the new gamecombos.com for the new decade. Hurrah!

  4. darcontek says:

I actually had a combo video featured there.

If you see on the left, I am pinno and I made an xvssf combo vid. The recent combo vids for xmvssf are way more insane than anything I made though.

Whoa, i remember that video! I might still have it stored somewhere on an old backup CD. Damn dude, i didn’t realize you were that oldschool. Any future plans for more combovids?

You’re right though, XSF went off the deep end. All those early Marvel games are pure chaos right now. The worst part is, none of the people who were breaking them (in a good way) bothered to write any transcripts. Now they’re all retired and there’s nobody left to explain them.

  5. darcontek says:

Heh. I’m not into making combo vids anymore. But I’ll try to upload the one that was released on youtube.

Sigh. Those were the days. Mailing tapes to random strangers in IRC because I was too poor to afford a capture card since I was 14. heheh. In fact, Tragic was supposed to release part 2 of my combo vid and its been 10 years and never got around to it. :/

  6. darcontek says:

Well. I uploaded it onto Youtube. Enjoy lol. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rugcvnnyu04

    • Maj says:

Haha awesome. I’ll have to keep that in mind for when there’s a slow day or something. It’s part of combo video history!

  7. Arc says:

Are you going to abandon Sonichurricane.com now? Or will you do some more stuff with it later once you get combovid all set up? Just curious since I’ve been going to sonichurricane.com everyday but there hasn’t been updates.

    • Maj says:

No, of course not. I’m just trying to get a handle on the day-to-day operation of ComboVid, but Sonic Hurricane will always be around. The weekly schedule might change a little, but the technical and strategy articles will resume shortly.

Each website serves a different purpose in my mind. That’ll become clear soon, once you see them both operating side-by-side.

  8. Arc says:

Ah, that’s good to hear. Your work and site…sites help me get through the days when I’m bored or don’t want to deal with classes.

  9. n00b_saib0t says:

i still think the layout is “clean” enough for the MS paint banner to work on the whole site. just saying. :p

  10. craigUK says:

Very nice sites you have Maj, what you do is greatly appreciated.

  11. Maj says:

Damn, this page really needs to be rewritten. I’ll try to set aside some time tomorrow to make the description shorter and more concise. It’s probably a good idea to remove that “Update Schedule” as well, since it changes every couple of weeks anyway.
